SEC Newgate Mood of the Nation - November 2025

Australians are increasingly pessimistic about the economic outlook, while concerns grow about the future direction of the country.

Majority support for 2035 emissions reductions target

59% support the Federal Government’s new 2035 target, with only one in five opposed, though doubts remain about Australia’s ability to achieve these goals.

The US is seen in an increasingly positive light by Australians

Positive sentiment has risen towards the US, with 53% rating our relationship as being at least ‘good’, well up from the 38% recorded in April when tariff concerns were making headlines. The AUKUS agreement also garners majority support amongst Australians.

Very few believe governments should intervene in work from home arrangements

A majority of 65% feel employees and employers should negotiate flexible working arrangements, whereas very few think employers (18%) or governments (12%) should set the rules.

Pessimism on the rise

The proportion of Australians who feel the country is heading in the wrong direction has continued to edge up to 61%, and is now back to levels similar to that recorded at the beginning of the year.
